In 3 days nearly the entire Bluesky team doubled, tripled, quadrupled down on the "WAFFLES" thing in response to upset users, and now Jesse Singal etc are using it as a Nazi slur against trans people https://bsky.app/profile/nogoodwyfe.bsky.social/post...

It would have been so easy to just, not do this

Is this the same team who banned someone for going "lol" at the death of St. Kirk? or was that someone else?

@futurebird Well I think most of the moderation team is a separate org and is largely outsourced. But this time it was core team members.

I've been hearing a lot of disappointing, but not exactly shocking things about what's going on over there.
Moderation is hard. And that's for a server with a few 100 people who mostly agree on the Big Things.
Moderating a "platform" kind of means having a whole process, and not commenting on things like this. It's really unprofessional.

@futurebird @cwebber They don’t want to be moderators. Never have. They want to build a platform that allows others to provide moderation-as-a-service.
The problem isn’t with their views on moderation, even though their take is terrible. The problem is how Jay interacts with people when they are mad or upset about an issue on the platform. She shitposts on them.

OK, but if you are "in charge" you shouldn't speak about any kind of pending moderation controversy about any people that you respect.
Which is why this is so obnoxious. I think we kind of agree now that I read your post again.
And "moderation as a service" sounds ... I hate it.
I want to participate in a community where anyone who has power respects people like me ... and my friends.
They could have just been silent.
