My husband has struck back. I joined a CSA for us to eat more vegetables and we have been coping well but now he is going off to CT to collect a bunch of eggplants which are in excess in the garden of my mother in law and must also be eaten and I can say nothing of this being too many vegetables because of my previous advocacy.

I am reading recipes with desperation please pray for me.

Maybe? There is some reason to believe that people can to some degree naturally swim. Toddlers can learn to swim with supervision but very little real instruction. A person never exposed to a large body of water until they are older can easily panic and drown.

It's harder to teach adults to swim. Mostly because they are rightly terrified of the water, so a safe introduction makes all the difference.

You see... swimming pools can help *prevent* drowning deaths.

Here in NYC there are a lot of people who never had the chance to learn to swim, despite living on an island, by the ocean, one that can occasionally cause floods.

The city has struggled with the issue of public pools for a century. Pools are often targeted by austerity cuts.

There is nothing frivolous about being able to swim.

Growing up with opportunities to swim makes you less likely to drown for life.

I'm enjoying the video essay on "Freakonomics" from "Unlearning Economics" an excellent youTube channel that deals with the academic side of economics.

In the video he criticizes the much maligned freakenomics "factoid" that claims that swimming pools are more dangerous to children than guns.

The analysis in the video essay is good, however, as a city pool advocate, I need to point out why this is much worse than even being wrong.

I know it's hard to see Trump as "more reasonable" than extremist republicans if you have been paying close attention. But, that image is very real for some of the people who voted for him.

Project 2025 is NOT popular. Your typical moderate doesn't want some kind of extreme libertarian set of government reforms that WILL have an impact on their life. They just wanted to see the annoying pundits and Democrats get angry.

It was obvious to most on the left that project 2025 was a serious plan that Trump would do his best to implement.

But many people who voted for him thought that this was just liberal noise: Trump critics finding the most extreme statements from those on the right and saying that's what Trump would do.

And Trump was careful to make room for people to believe this lie, always putting a little distance between himself and the plan.

    No longer!

The song, isn't even good. "Here Comes the Reaper" is a kickass song, but the cover is just so bad it is very distracting.

I recognize most of the people in the video because I pay too much attention to politics.

But for most people this will just be a bit of incoherent noise.

What I think is much more important is Trumps recent admission that he *is* working to implement project 2025.

Please remember he denied this when he was running for office.

In the video the "reaper" ... the specter of death are republicans.

What strikes me most is that this meme is ... confusing. I don't think most American will know who most of the people in it are. It's confusing inside baseball stuff.

My husband has studied Chinese for a decade and is now good enough to be "almost illiterate in Chinese" as opposed to knowing absolutely nothing about it.

It shocks people though when he breaks it out: most recently to help some elderly lost tourists who were with us. They wanted to keep him I think. It was concerning.

And I find it very cool and sexy that he does this.

Speaking multiple languages is a kind of power. It makes you objectively more powerful. It's an advantage in negotiations, so how you have it become a liability for a US politician to be "caught" being bilingual in some contexts is wild to me.

Why don't we insist that our schools graduate multilingual students? Just to protect the egos of adults who have never learned?

Anyway there is some noise about this in what passes for US politics at the moment.

I think it can be hard to understand, especially for people from Europe or well, anywhere but maybe Australia how crazy Americans are about language.

Despite being a multicultural country with people from all over the world many Americans are linguistically isolated by history, by geography and by hard-headedness.

It is hard to learn a second language as an English speaker in the US, even if you live in a city like New York and this puts us at a global disadvantage.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like he still seems to think moderation is about keeping people from seeing things that might offend them.

That's not what moderation is about. That's why people may call for moderation. There is a difference.

    Moderation is about community safety.

OK, but if you are "in charge" you shouldn't speak about any kind of pending moderation controversy about any people that you respect.

Which is why this is so obnoxious. I think we kind of agree now that I read your post again.

And "moderation as a service" sounds ... I hate it.

I want to participate in a community where anyone who has power respects people like me ... and my friends.

They could have just been silent.
