Hashtags are a foundational concept on the Fediverse due to how Mastodon servers limit search (and Mastodon dominates the network, so you have to learn to play by Mastodon’s rules if you want to be seen). This means they’re the primary way people find and interact with posts and people on particular topics.
Do keep in mind that hashtag links probably don’t work the way you expect, due to the quirks of how servers communicate. These will still only show you posts that have been delivered to kitchenparty.online (or your local server, if you’re a CFA).
Which hashtags are used for what, however, is not always obvious or transparent, and not all of them are the same as what communities might use on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
Here’s a starting list of some of the Fediverse’s most active and interesting hashtag communities

If a post hasn’t been delivered to your instance, you can’t see it. People coming to the Fediverse — that is, the decentralized network of ‘federated’ social media websites and communities running Mastodon, Misskey (or Calckey, like KPO), PixelFed, BookWyrm, PeerTube, or any number of other pieces of software — from centralized social networks often find their initial experiences confusing and frustrating. Though these websites have user interfaces that make them look very similar to the big corporate platforms, the user experience is substantially […]
- Community Rules & GuidelinesWe want to be good party hosts! This means more than having a good spread on the table and beer in the fridge, though. It means a lot more! It means making sure everyone feels safe and welcome at the party. It means No Punching Down While it’s not necessarily always clear which direction is ‘down’, generally speaking, if you’re a white, heterosexual, cis-gendered, affluent, neurotypical man in Europe or a territory colonized by one or more European countries, giving someone attitude for not being one of those things is kind of a dick move, and while there are plenty […]
