Was up early this morning because this evil very noisy truck woke me up at 5:50 am. I went down to see what the hell it was doing, and they were sucking out by pipe some weird crumbly waste from the basement of one of the buildings in the alleyway.
I told them to tell their boss it's a problem because 200 people are trying to sleep in the building next door (ie our building!). Such are the trials of city living... It never occurs to these companies that people might be living with earshot of their middle-of-the-night noise.

As a more civilized city than NYC you probably have some rules about trucks parking like that during the day.
But since they must park AND make a racket they might need to get that whole street closed.
Anyway I wish you luck on better sleep.

@futurebird yeah I suspect they don't have a permit, and I'm going to complain about them to the city council today. They're usually okay with voice complaints.

That is such a cute truck. Was it electric?
I'm a little into small trucks since I don't understand why we can use them in NYC.

Did you know that every grocery store in NYC, and we have SO MANY has a bunch of trucks pull up *in front of the store* during the day and that is how they get the food into the store? It is MADNESS.
I don't know how we even survive.

@futurebird @timrichards Vancouver has this system where the dense part of the street grid also has wide, driveable alleys for deliveries and garbage removal, parallel to and between the through-streets. light timing and other traffic tricks are used to keep cars from choosing to drive through them unnecessarily.
as someone who, a long time ago, lived in NYC, the contrast is just astonishing.

I wish we had a cross shipment center on the edge of the city that unloads the giant trucks and puts the boxes in electric Kei trucks.
It would cost more in labor (can also read that as create jobs) but when I see a massive box truck with like 5 boxes in it because it's the last delivery of the day I wonder how much more efficient it really is to consolidate them that far.

We could have a little freight subway that ran around the town and bikes and tiny electric trucks to get things to the door.
This probably isn't practical... but I like to fantasize about a freight subway since it seems like the most ant-like solution.

There used to be something like that in London in the 1860s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Pneumatic_Despatch_Company
