Story: The family of a very wealthy, and very dead tech bro, gather at the law offices to hear the reading of the will. None want to admit just how much they are counting on a big payday. But, he wasn't a very likable guy, and this becomes more aparent as they discuss their memories.
Everyone claims to be there "for family" and *not* money but then it turns out the inheritance is just a bunch of ape NFTs.
And they only real treasure they have is each other. Fisticuffs. Curtain.

I'm thinking the main character is an artist or scientist with very different values than her gauche family. But, like everyone she needs money too and is very conflicted about even showing up. And of course her siblings know this and make it more difficult for her.
We get to discover why each of them needs money and some of the reasons are very good. But, no one is getting anything. The old man has nothing of value to contribute ... even in death.

The larger themes would be about how older generations can fail to nurture institutions or create things for the younger generations.
And how counting on them doing such work can be something of a fools errand.
And also a chance to show exactly how some of the "elders" of our time really will be remembered. How their legacy is worthless. Or how it could be worthless if they don't wake up.

Well the story of how the next generation takes on the works of the last feels timely now. It's an older story than Shakespeare.
There are only like 20 different stories.

@futurebird Not fisticuffs. Poison, stilettos, tumbles (verb) down unforgiving marble staircases, known allergens with inexplicably missing epi pens, EV self immolation outside the lobby, et al.

ooooh so they all end up harming each other in a struggle over nothing. That could be good, though I would like some of them to make it out alive and learn a thing.

The inheritance is our love for each other, it's family! And we hate each other!
