I finally read Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan recently. It's most famous for his translations of Japanese folktales, but he concludes with several "Insect Studies" which veer between folklore and his own observations in Japan.
He goes on at great length about #ants ! He's fascinated by their social structure and reproduction. It's all rather anthropomorphized, but it was interesting coming from 1904.
You've probably read it, but I couldn't not tell you about it.

I have not read this! Thank you for letting me know about it. I'm a huge fan of "insect parade" murals from Japan... but never dug much deeper than that.
