    I'm sitting in a meeting on undergrad teaching across the campus. From my perspective as a history prof, it's wild listening to colleagues in the sciences complaing about over-enrolment. I mean, it's great that they have students, but JFC this is a problem I and other profs in the humanities would love to have.

      @brian_gettler

      This idea is not fully baked, but I think part of the solution is getting groups of students out of the classroom and into different spaces for a variety of different experiences over the course of a semester. It costs money and it's a logistical nightmare, but it's also fun and gets you some street cred around campus. A little love for your GTA museums and walking tour providers from local history societies could go a long way.

        @sendtherunners You're right, of course - we can do a lot with the world outside the classroom to get students excited about studying the humanities. Still, it strikes me that the real issue is getting students in the door and that's something that needs addressing well before they get to university (and with so many more people than just the students themselves). Going to the ROM won't change that.

          @brian_gettler History is flagging here in my undisclosed location to the point that every retirement now means one line is closed for good. It’s a damn shame. I have a colleague who is fighting back by using high school visits to play up the importance of humanities degrees… for video game story writing and film and tv development. It’s a solid pitch that does get a few seniors interested. Everybody wants a flood of content and we play a huge role in making it.
