my 1980s republican in-laws are going to some kind of no kings protest in the suburbs

@futurebird THAT IS AMAZING NEWS!!! Congratulations on that, I see the light showing a bit more every morning.
We, the people who follow politics closely can easily forget that most people just ignore it. It's cantankerous, confusing and often ugly. And talking about it can make people angry at you.
I think that some of this stuff is causing "how bad it is" to break that containment.
It's kind of goofy the Jimmy is playing this role but people who never bring up politics on their own are disgusted.
Because this is a level of censorship that reaches even the less poltical.

I'm so annoyed in some ways because I've been like a broken record for this for years. But many people have been like "well we will just vote this away"
It might not be that simple.

@futurebird My grandparents died long before shit got so bad, and in a way I'm glad for them... but they were Eisenhower Republicans and had excellent bullshit detectors. I have faith that they would be PISSED if they were here today.
@kentenmakto @futurebird Yeah some of that generation saw through this stuff ... father-in-law was a republican but absolutely hated Gingrich and I can just guess what he'd think about the current clowns if he was here.

There are a LOT of people who have left the Republican party but no one really talks about it. Odd.

holy jesus, people ignoring politics
do such people ignore disease symptoms, warning signs, the presence of rattlesnakes, and their other responsibilities too?
or are the dangers of neglected politics somehow to them some kind of special coffin nail they absolutely must have.

It's designed and presented in ways to make it very easy to ignore unless you have a boot on your neck or are some kind of nerd. (or both!)

@TerryHancock @futurebird @panmanphil it's nice to see there are at least some people in the republican base who actually mean the "free speech" thing they constantly repeat
@ireneista @TerryHancock @futurebird @panmanphil He co-hosted The Man Show, which appealed to the same sort of crowd Rogan does. That might have something to do with it.

@steter @ireneista @TerryHancock @futurebird @panmanphil I don't want to guess at anyone's age, but I cannot imagine any of my boomer Reagan-loving in-laws or aunts and uncles listening to the Man Show.

I've been slowly working on them on the Reagan thing. It's a long term project let us say.

Reagan is beloved by huge swaths of the American public and to suggest that he wasn't one of the great presidents will grind conversations, even with "liberals" to a stop.
But we can take a little comfort from this. America has always just been like this. It's not unprecedented.
We can claw it back again. We can claw it back better.

@panmanphil no it was Jimmy kimmel of all the damn things
