oh my god thank you for the follow but the closest i get to keeping ants is checking out the nest of japanese wood ants near my house

my habit of breaking important things means i probably should not house a colony in my home

I also have a number of "outside colonies" that I think of as mine. I may bring them a treat and am always excited to see if they will emerge after another winter.

Camponotus japonicus might be your ants, if by wood ants you mean carpenters? Their nests are invaded by an interesting caterpillar that fools the ants into feeding it. Diabolical!

... what if the ants want it to "beef up their mandibles" ?

Poor girls, that makes even less sense. Oh the evils of social media.

(Tempted to make a parody video where a bunch of minor workers look at a major worker chewing up pine resin and copy her trying to get bigger mandibles. )

@futurebird To be fair, there's some pretty stiff competition out there!

            (No, not a diffusion-generated image. It's from a game.)

              Well, that *is* an antlion.

I have such mixed feelings about real antlions. I mean, they are so nefarious. But that's also kind of fascinating. Then they have that whole "so ugly its cute" thing going on.

I would like to think that this image you have shared is used by an ant gang as their edgy logo. Sort of like naming your biker bar after Jake the Ripper.

I am concerned it might pull out ones teeths?

Anyway, they chew it to "beef up the jaw" I don't think this is a thing. It's very hard to make a muscle larger with targeted training that is not in the limbs. Facial fat distribution has more to do with this.

But, my ants adore pine resin so I'm tempted to get some for them. But feel compelled to explain that it is for my ants.

@futurebird Spruce Gum was a thing when I was a kid in Maine, not sure if it's still around. Although really all you need to do is find a spruce tree.

I'm not eating things I find on trees in a NYC park.
