Woah! Is this the fedi's first state sponsored ban?

I expect they got too confused to ban all of the instances ... that's why we are here after all.

@futurebird "What is behind Nepal’s Gen Z protest?
Growing dissatisfaction among the youth with corruption in the country materialized into the demonstration on Monday."

"“While the recent ban on social media platforms has added fuel to the unrest, the grievances extend far deeper, rooted in longstanding neglect and the silencing of youth voices.”"

@futurebird And..."Nepal’s government has lifted a ban on about two dozen social media platforms after the curb ignited youth-led demonstrations across the country on Monday that saw more than a dozen protesters killed in the capital Kathmandu."

Guess they are hoping this will help placate them.

@futurebird BTW here in Brazil there's a proposed definition of social media that doesn't include Mastodon and most of the Fediverse, and I think it is great from an operational perspective

              https://telesintese.com.br/cgi-br-publica-versao-final-dos-10-principios-para-a-regulacao-de-redes-sociais/

It would probably be easier to translate the definition from here:

Documento reúne diretrizes para orientar eventual marco regulatório das redes sociais no Brasil, com foco em democracia, direitos fundamentais e transparência.

mastodon is an app... but this makes it sound like one could just use a different fedi app ...

and honestly let's keep everyone thinking that's how it works.

@futurebird Hi! It is, in fact, not about the social media ban.

The protests is about Corruption, and Nepotism. Gen Z of Nepal have been calling out and pushing back against it for a while now. But then suddenly, all mediums of doing so were banned in one fell sweep, leading the people to protest physically.

During this, it has been reported that water spray, gear gas and rubber bullets were deployed, injuring and killing protestors (identity uknown), who got shot and was being treated. Reports of deaths have gone up to 17 according to some outlets, with alleged lethal bullets used.
