* using flattery to hide incompetence or laziness
* fake enthusiasm because they want to be liked

Some of the people I cherish most in my life have a reputation with others for being kind of rude and off-putting when they are, instead, just very direct and not good at being "likable" so they don't bother.
Thing is. THAT is what I like best in a long term friendship.
