Last night I picked a bunch of videos about "the early earth" to listen to as I fell asleep. Somehow an AI generated one got into the mix about Hallucigenia, the strange velvet-worm like Cambrian fossil. This is how in a state of hazy half sleep I found myself bewildered at 1am listening to what I can only describe as horrendous and mean-spirited slander about an extinct organism.
I managed to wake up and stop the video but only then had some time to think about why it existed at all.

@futurebird Why the hate for hallucigenia? They're cool!

I think the person who generated the topic was going for "snarky" but instead it was this long diatribe about how poorly adapted Hallucigenia was, how it was a "mistake of evolution" and just dunking on the poor creature relentlessly.
I was delighted to see it had only a few dozen views, and hope it stays that way so I won't tell you how to find it.
The alternative is that there is someone who just HATES this creature. Both possibilities are hilarious.

@futurebird Wish there was an AI slop filter for Youtube. 🫤

That's what made it so funny.

It was so bizarre it woke me up. I came out of a dream like "who is talking about my Hallucigenia like that?" I was ready to fight.

@futurebird @catsalad "Hallucigenia was non-ambulatory and never mastered sex, that's why they they didn't start the Phanerozoic until they were all dead"
*cruel trilobites tittering*

What kind of shade did the AI throw at hallucigenia? Didn't like the spikes?

It said the spikes which are a lovely adaptation were "ineffective" "useless" and "on the wrong side"
That last one isn't even the creatures fault, it was the *scientists* who put them upside down for years! It was so unfair!
