Giant Squid?
Rogue Wave?Seems like most of the things that sailors go on about with horror (that land lovers dismiss as tall tales) turn out to be real.
What else should we stop laughing about?

I have seen a vile whirlpool in the helle gate whilst kayaking around NYC
The helle gate is the home of a maelstrom even on a clear and windless day, the tides drive boils and sinks, standing waves and the wicked whirlpool which tried to take my paddle from me.

some of the "great sea serpent" reports of the 18th and 19th centuries were probably whales. But often poorly understood whales, such as the sei whale, or the beaked whales.some of the "great sea serpent" reports were probably sea turtles dragging fishing nets they were entangled with.
some were probably due to oarfish, which are truly odd-looking, very thin and long fish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oarfish

Oarfish are so elegant and beautiful. It's like a fish from a fairy kingdom.
Sometimes they have been seen resting in a vertical position. I love them.
