For a while people tried to differentiate roguelikes, which maintained the lack of metaprogression, with roguelites, which did have progression. But that was pretty clearly a losing battle, the two names were far too similar to stay distinct as long as one or the other took off. Some few pendants still try to maintain the distinction, but that ship sailed ages ago.

it's been a common sentiment in my local group too, but amidst these fears i feel it's important to remember that pokemon co is still going to maintain ultimate control over the game.

Agreed, I own a bunch of older handhelds with better form factors and large libraries of games. I tried to give gaming on iOS a go and it’s fine but the catalogue is still to small if you don’t want to touch gachas. I think this thing might be for people who play those though.
