The podcast the thread is about "Breaking Points" what is it? Who supports it? What is it doing?

It's a growing left leaning news podcast on youTube ?

Yeah. They could be trying to reach out to a more right leaning audience which could be fine. But I don't really know what they are about.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has been following them since before they blew up (and they are blowing up, coming up in every search)... I'm not saying they are good or bad, I just don't know what their perspective is, and what audience or funding is supporting that perspective.

I like to know that with anything that I listen to.

Normally I read the fedi and look for any stories people are talking about, then search YouTube to find news clips to listen to while I do things around the house. In the past month a new (for me) source has popped up: "Breaking Points" it features Krystal Ball who I think was a Bernie person? Saagar Enjeti I know less about.

They call themselves "a fearless anti-establishment podcast"

I'm curious about their funding and political angle.

xerces is also for invertebrates so clam fans can take note of that.

Naturally I think that every country should have something like an "Office of Ants" but, this is just work for the future.

I'm always interested in insect conservation. In the US we have xerces.org the Entomological Association of America is a professional service org not so much conservation, though I'd expect them to be sympathetic to those goals.

If you are in France you should check OPIE out (Office for Protection of Insects and Entomology) though I can't tell if it's a government organization or a non-profit?

It's one of those things that you kind of assume exists. Of course I can find a book on "The Ants of Major Country/Region" but ... no maybe you can't. At least not one that isn't from 1919 with no photos.

"The Ants of Borneo" Is full of tempting leads, but it's so old many of the names have changed and some of the ants only have one or two words about them.

Granted there are about 16,000 species of ants. STILL.

The same is true for origami books but you don't need to be able to read to get a lot out of those.

But, there are still whole seas of information hidden behind language barriers. I guess translating field guides isn't lucrative?

I want to say a little bit about insect field guides and languages. Although, I think this applies for any kind of field guide for plants, rocks, birds anything...

It's very hard to find good field guides in multiple languages, even in a spamy language like English or French. Guides tend to be localized.

There are whole shelves of ant books that haven't been translated and I can't read them and it drives me nuts.

I mean it makes sense, but I want all of them.

Nonetheless a top notch field guide with lots of photos, helpful tips on how to tell the ants apart.

Yes. I read field guides sometimes. What are you going to do about it? It's like a catalog of interesting ants I might meet someday if I ever travel over there.

  • There is an intersection between two threads here -- @HeavenlyPossum 's "trust your instincts" and @futurebird 's "what is the difference between ordinary Democrats and 'Blue MAGA'?" (both of those are paraphrases, not quotes) that comes down to: Micha...

For the record I wouldn't call myself a Democrat. Mostly because I don't know what that means? I just think that in many cases it's prudent to use your vote for a Democrat. With many exceptions.

I don't think we have any "problem students" but there are students who I'd rather not deal with together because they are either too good friends and annoying or they don't like each other and they are annoying or... if you can imagine it... BOTH.
