When I've messed with an ant and return her frustrated and scared from being trapped to her colony her presence causes a visible disturbance.
She must smell of things that don't belong. If she is upset, her sisters grow upset too. It spreads like a ripple, but if it's just one ant as she calms it's forgotten.
But, if too many ants in one area are alarmed like that the whole colony may start to "boil."
Everyone knows what "boiling ants" looks like, but I think I should break it down.
Ants read everything about each other and their environment. The way their sisters move, the food in their crops, they way they smell, the pheromones they release, what they are carrying, which way they are moving, the stridulations they make, all of it is part of gaining a sense of the local needs of the colony. All of it will change the decisions of each individual ant.
So, it's not like there is a "way" that ants communicate. They are living information for their sisters.
Reading a book about a naturalist in Costa Rica in the 70s observing ants. He frames the question of ant communication as "do they *mostly* use stridulations (sounds) or do they use antennae tapping or do they use pheromones?" He concludes that ant communication is "primarily pheromones" and this isn't exactly *wrong*

Had dream about trying to keep people from going to this new muffin chain called "Cinnabar" because it was obvious they were going to get Mercury poisoning but no one would listen to me and they kept eating the bright red muffins and getting sick.
BUT it tuned out they weren't really "getting sick" they were transforming into demons (pretty red ones with fancy scrollwork and dragon themes) because the chain's secret real name was SINNERBAR.

I think my very whiny students are making me slowly become more whiny.
They are sweet kids, but boy oh boy do they whine.
How is the school year over already? How is it time for me to write comments so soon. Time keeps going and it's NOT FAIR.
Worse. I have cleared most of my summer calendar to write my book and I have NO EXCUSES. This is horrible.

The time is NOW. I can write at 9am when my brain is the most fresh and zesty. Wow.
Law that says that appliances with a clock feature MUST by law have an option to simply turn the clock display off so you don't need to set it.
The stove, dishwasher and toaster oven and kettle all want to be clocks too. It's creepy. Also my poor husband feels compelled to keep all such devices correctly set but *I* have to show him how to do it.
Where are the "ogre making a martini in a stone shaker" noises that once lulled me to sleep?
Please stop being scary I'm having enough stress.
I suppose it's also "properly insulated" and "better design" but I'm sad and miss the racket.
The new dishwasher is TOO QUIET. It's not making a comforting racket. I'm devastated. LMAO

I found this in our library and it is a wordless masterpiece! Only a “children’s book” in the sense that children will be able to enjoy it as much as adults.
I’m going in blind which is how I like to read books best.
