@andrewfeeney Well, 9 things. I happen to know one of them is the cyberTruck. I don't think we know the half of the dangers those pose. If I see one in a parking garage I try to stay away from the whole building. Our building's garage has a soft ban on them and certain brands of ebikes. Because they will burn down your lovely building.

@futurebird @barrygoldman1 in the 1980s, our geometry, analytic geometry, trigonometry, and even algebra books had a few compass and straight edge exercises. (Well, the geometry book had a lot more than a few.) But we were told to skip all that stuff, with the exception of one math teacher who quickly gave up after learning the math department only had about 5 compasses and most students didn't have one.

@futurebird I've often thought that if star-wars-like hyperdrive was real (or even star-trek-like warp drive), the alien equivalent of a plant or a fungus without anything we'd call intellect would evolve the ability to use it to spread from one star system to the next.

@futurebird At the other end of the scale are these tiny metallic Fairy Moths (family Adelidae), like this one I saw in Singapore. Only a few mm in length, and look like tiny fairies in flight.And I still haven't figured out why they have such long antennas. On iNat [ https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/274484402 ].

@mempko@fosstodon.org I'm watching this play out as researchers I'm in the halo of are actively banking on LLMs to eliminate the cost of hiring data labellers. Their reasoning is motivated by the fantasy of cost savings, not better results. Watching them bend over backwards to excuse the LLM's middling success rate and to handwave away how it misses almost everything of actual interest to their research is embarrassing.

But also, nutomic (who _may_ have made LemmyBB? not sure.) is a busy person who has a day job and doesn't work on lemmy full-time
